If you're a commercial grower upgrading from HPS to LED, or adding the Gavita Pro 1700e Gen2 to an existing greenhouse, this list is for you. This checklist is what I now give every new team member — and every client — before they touch a new fixture.
There are five steps below. Follow them in order, and you'll avoid 90% of the headaches I had to learn the hard way.
Step 1: Verify Voltage Compatibility — Don't Trust the Label
Everything I'd read about Gavita LED grow lights said the Pro 1700e Gen2 runs on 120-277V. That's true — but only for the standard version. What they don't always tell you is there's also a high-voltage variant (208-480V) for commercial facilities. I learned this the hard way.
In September 2022, I ordered twelve units for a new facility. Checked the spec sheet, saw '120-277V' and thought we were good. When they arrived, the label said '208-480V.' Step 2: Mount at the Right Height — Lower Isn't Better
The conventional wisdom is to hang LED lights as close as possible for maximum intensity. In practice, with the Gavita Pro 1700e Gen2, I found the opposite. This light is powerful — it puts out 1700+ µmol/s. If you hang it at 12 inches like you would an HPS, you'll bleach your canopy.
I made this mistake in Q1 2024. We hung a row of eight fixtures at 14 inches above a tomato crop. Within three days, top leaves showed bleaching. We had to raise everything to 24 inches and lost 10 days of vegetative growth. That error cost about $890 in redo (labor for re-hanging) plus the yield loss.

- Vegetative stage: 30–36 inches above canopy
- Flowering stage: 24–30 inches above canopy
- High CO₂ (1200+ ppm): 18–24 inches (but monitor closely)
Also, spacing between fixtures matters. For a 4×4 tent or bench, center them 4 feet apart. For a larger facility, follow Gavita's spacing chart (available on their site). I should add that we tested closer spacing on a small batch and saw diminishing returns beyond 3.5 feet — so don't pack them too tight.
One more thing: if you're tempted to mount a Gavita light as an island chandelier in your living room because it looks 'cool' — don't. I've had two clients ask me about this. The spectrum is optimized for photosynthesis, not aesthetics. It'll make your plants grow like crazy, but your eyes will hate the pinkish-white glare. Step 3: Set the Spectrum and Power Correctly — Don't Leave It on Default

Also, the Gen2 includes a built-in timer for sunrise/sunset ramping. Use it. Step 4: Manage Environment — Light Alone Isn't Enough
People assume the best LED grow light will automatically improve yields. They don't see that without proper temperature, humidity, and CO₂ management, even a Gavita Pro 1700e can't work miracles. About 18 months ago, a new client called me panicked: his plants looked droopy despite perfect light levels. I asked about temperature. He said he measured leaf temperature at 82°F, which sounded fine. But I knew that with LEDs, leaf temp can be 3-5°F cooler than with HPS because there's less radiant heat. What to check:
- Maintain room temperature 1-2°F higher than usual when using LED (to compensate for lack of IR heat).

- If your facility has CO₂ enrichment, raise level to 1000-1200 ppm to capitalize on the extra light.
Another gotcha: I once tried to replace LED strip lights in a small propagation area with a Gavita LED module (thinking it would be a quick swap). The voltage and driver specs didn't match — I blew a driver within 24 hours. That was a $200 mistake just because I assumed 'LED' meant interchangeable. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping the electrical calculation. I've seen facilities where the combined load of multiple Pro 1700es tripped main breakers. Always run a load calculation before installation.
- Not using a surge protector. These lights have sensitive drivers. After a lightning storm fried two units (ugh, $1,200), I insisted on whole-facility surge protection.
- Ignoring the IP rating. The Pro 1700e Gen2 is IP65 rated — fine for damp greenhouses. But don't use it outdoors in rain; it's not IP67. Someone asked me if they could hang it over an outdoor hydroponic setup. I said no. (He did it anyway. The light failed after three days. $1,000 down.)
- Assuming all Gavita lights are the same. The Pro series is different from the E-Series and CT series in spectrum, driver, and dimming. If you mix models in one room, you'll get uneven canopy response.
