It started with a phone call at 10:14 p.m. on a Tuesday. The voice on the other end was calm, but the words weren't: "One of our Gavita bulbs just popped. We have a room full of plants that are supposed to be in flower, and the lights are supposed to kick back on at 5 a.m."
I manage emergency lighting requests for a commercial lighting supplier. That title sounds more official than it is—mostly it means I'm the person who gets calls when something important is dark. The Obvious Fix Wasn't the Fix

We compared the numbers. According to Gavita's published spec sheet, the Pro RS 1900e LED is rated for 120-277V. Their lighting circuit was 277V, so we didn't need to rewire the room. The 1900e was also designed for roughly the same coverage area as the old 1000w double-ended fixture, and it puts less radiant heat directly onto the canopy. I said "less heat," not "no heat." Then I almost made a rookie mistake. I assumed we could hang the 1900e at the same height as the old DE hood. We couldn't. The recommended mounting height was different—lower than the DE hood. The Part That Had Nothing to Do with Grow Lights
After we finished, the facility manager asked, "Since you're here, can you look at the Venetian chandelier in the event barn?" The barn was used for weddings, and the chandelier was the centerpiece. It had been dead for a week, and the electrician they called never showed up.
At first, I figured the chandelier itself was the problem. That's what the manager thought. But the fixture turned out to be fine. The problem was upstream. A GFCI outlet near the barn door had tripped, and the same circuit also served the chandelier.

After that night, I added a simple step to our rush-order checklist: confirm the actual failure before you order the part. It sounds obvious, but the pressure of a deadline makes people skip it. A phone call at 10 p.m. makes you want to act fast. Fast is fine. Fast and wrong is expensive.
We also started checking voltage and mounting height on every LED retrofit. Every fixture is different. I don't have hard data on how many emergency lighting calls are really misdiagnoses, but I'd guess it's at least a third. I wish I'd started tracking it earlier.
I'm not going to tell you Gavita LEDs are always the answer. They're not. HPS still has a place, especially in cold climates where the heat is useful.
