You're Chasing the Wrong Number
Let me get this out of the way: I'm not a grower. I'm an office administrator for a medium-sized horticultural facility. I manage equipment purchasing—roughly $450,000 annually across 12 vendors. I report to both the head grower and finance.
The way I see it, the commercial grower community has a collective obsession that's leading people down the wrong path. Everyone's fixated on PPF numbers. The highest PPF at the lowest wattage. But if you're making decisions based purely on PPF-per-dollar, you're setting yourself up for expensive and painful surprises.
From the outside, it looks like more light means more yield, and efficiency is king. But the reality is that a light fixture doesn't operate in a vacuum (unfortunately). It operates within a complex ecosystem of controls, mounting structures, electrical infrastructure, and environmental sensors. Ignoring that ecosystem is a costly mistake.
The Argument: Compatibility Is the Killer Feature
Argument 1: Your Control System Dictates Everything
In my role, I've seen the fallout from incompatible choices. People assume that a high-PPF light will deliver high yields. Actually, a light that can't integrate with your facility's control system will deliver high frustration. The causation runs the other way: a well-integrated, medium-efficiency system almost always outperforms a high-efficiency system that's fighting your infrastructure.
When I took over purchasing in 2022, our facility had three different light brands, each with their own control protocol. We had two types of dimming cables, three different mounting adapters, and a control room that looked like a server rack from 2005. It was a nightmare.
I learned a hard lesson when we tried to integrate a batch of high-PPF units from a budget manufacturer. They promised compatibility with our TrolMaster controller (like, they actually sold a 'TrolMaster adapter' for it). The adapter didn't work properly. The lights would flicker at certain dimming levels. The grower was furious. I spent three months dealing with returns, credits, and a very unhappy finance department.
Dodged a bullet when we eventually switched to a system that was natively compatible. But it cost us time and yield we never got back.
Argument 2: The 'Raw Performance' Lie
People think that a higher PPF number means better light quality for the plant. Actually, raw lumens are a very poor predictor of whether the spectrum is optimized for photosynthesis. The assumption is that more is better. The reality is that spectrum quality and uniformity under the canopy matter far more.
So glad I finally pushed our team to look beyond the headline specs. We did a side-by-side test with a well-known brand like Gavita Pro 900e (which, full disclosure, we now use extensively) against a 'higher-PPF' competitor. The Gavita unit had a 5-7% lower peak PPF number. But its uniformity across a 5x5 area was significantly better. The canopy penetration was superior. The result? Comparable yield, less energy use, and happier plants. (Thankfully.)
The spec sheet doesn't tell you that story.
What About the 'Ecosystem Lock-In' Objection?
I know what some of you are thinking. 'You're just arguing for ecosystem lock-in. You want us to buy everything from one brand so we can't negotiate on price.' I'd argue that's a fair concern—to some extent.
But here's what I've learned from 5 years of managing these relationships: ecosystem lock-in is only a problem if the ecosystem is mediocre. If the best-in-class light fixture also happens to natively integrate with the best-in-class controller (like TrolMaster, for example), that's not a trap—that's a solution that works.
The real lock-in is being stuck with a system that doesn't work properly because you bought incompatible parts to save a few dollars upfront. That's the 'lock-in' that costs you thousands in lost yield and operational headaches.
So glad we chose integration over raw specs. Almost went the other way, which would have been a disaster.
My Bottom Line
Stop chasing the highest PPF number. Chase the system that works with your infrastructure, has proper support, and comes from a manufacturer who understands commercial horticulture.
For us, that meant standardizing on a platform that had proven compatibility with our environmental controls (TrolMaster), had a flexible voltage range (120-277V for our older facility, 208-480V for our newer one), and offered a clear upgrade path (like the Pro RS 2400e and the CT 1930e fixtures we've been adding).
The growers were skeptical at first. 'But the PPF number is lower,' they said. But after one season, the data spoke for itself. And I didn't have to deal with angry phone calls from finance. That's a metric that matters to me.
